Spring is upon us and the air is becoming warmer.

With this steady climb in temperature comes a need to include lighter fabrics in a our wardrobe, both in thickness and color. Lighter fabrics inherently breathe more and lighter colors absorb less heat, meaning I’m less inclined to faint from heat-stroke; One too many days on a tennis court on a hot summer day teaches a person that. The texture and density of your average, run-of-the -mill gingham does a phenomenal job at keeping us cool in the blazing heat, so much so that it has become an iconic summer fabric and a favorite amongst American southerners.

Maybe that’s why my mum dressed my sister and me in head to toe matching gingham outfits. Thankfully, this year the fabric is on-trend with mainstream fashion, taking an age old classic and breathing new life into it. A viral hit with bloggers everywhere this season was the red gingham asymmetrical skirt from Zara and I’ve seen multiple knock-offs of this exact piece in the little fast fashion shops in my small city here in Korea. One of my top favorite bloggers, #iamchouquette, wore hers whilst visiting Japan, with the Chanel Viva Coco Cuba Libre shirt and red iconic double-flap handbag, and a distressed jean jacket. Personally, I’m not a jean jacket girl but they way she layers the look works so well that I’m tempted to grab one.

In my #ootd I chose a black gingham dress for the versatility. The black and white mix traps some warmth as we deal with the roller-coaster temperature changes that occur in the spring. When worn with over-the-knee boots, air flow is balanced for any situation. Take my baby doll a-line gingham dress paired with the much loved over-the-knee boots of last season, a classic Chanel * 2.55 flap bag, and the new SS17 * Dio(R)evolution sunglasses and you’ll be ready to face the oncoming glorious warmer days heading our way.

Gingham. Heat. Self-preservation. Two of these equals the other.
